About Gatineau Decoded
Since June 1, 2023, Ville de Gatineau stopped providing English translations of Municipal Council agendas, citing obligations under Bill 96. This leaves thousands of English-speaking residents without accessible information about decisions that affect them. Gatineau Decoded translates French-language council documents into plain English using AI, and publishes them here for free.
After translation, we extract key facts/locations or otherwise deemed relevant keywords and index them, allowing you to track what is happening in a street of project name very easily since you can keep track of that address and refresh frequently to look for changes.
I have some ideas for expanding the website and would love to hear your feedback.
- Making the website bi-lingual. I believe information extraction and linking is useful for everyone
- Expanding to other sources that impact Gatineau or nearby municipalities
How it works
- Council agendas (PDFs) are downloaded from gatineau.ca
- Text is extracted, translasted and summarized
- Each item gets a plain-English title, 2–3 sentence summary, category, and significance rating
- The site is rebuilt and deployed after each council meeting
