The City of Gatineau is applying for grants from the Tricentris "S'investir pour des communautés durables" program to fund projects related to textile recycling, waste sorting in multi-unit buildings, and battery/electronics collection, as outlined in the city's 2023-2029 waste management plan.

Council authorized the Water and Residual Materials Department to apply for grants from the Tricentris 'Investing in Sustainable Communities' program. The funds will support initiatives from the 2023-2029 Residual Materials Management Plan, including textile recovery, waste sorting in multi-unit buildings, and electronics recycling.

The city is approving $122,400 in financial aid for 10 non-profit organizations (NPOs) for the 2025-2026 period. This program supports local initiatives focused on waste reduction, reuse, and public education, as outlined in the city's 2023-2029 Residual Materials Management Plan.

The Commission discussed strategies to reduce single-use plastics in Gatineau, including potential bans on specific items and requirements for reusable dishware in restaurants. The Commission recommended that the City develop regulations to ban certain plastic items (such as utensils, straws, and #6 plastics) and mandate reusable dishware for on-site dining, while also exploring subsidy programs to support local businesses during this transition.

The city is creating a new permanent Administrative Clerk position within the Water and Residual Materials Service to support the implementation of the 2023-2029 Residual Materials Management Plan (PGMR).
